About Barrenjoey Montessori School

Barrenjoey Montessori School is an independent not-for-profit school established in 1985 by a group of parents dedicated to creating Montessori education opportunities on Sydney’s upper Northern Beaches.

Commencing with a single preschool class in Newport, the school has grown to cater for the education of children from Birth–12 years across two campuses.

Our Campuses

  • Tasman Rd Campus

Tucked behind the sand dunes of Avalon Beach on Des Creagh Reserve, our Tasman Rd campus is home to both preschool and primary students. The school relocated from Newport to the purpose-built Avalon site in 1990, with growing demand and a strong interest in Montessori primary education leading to the addition of a lower primary classroom and a second preschool classroom in 2010. In 2017, the construction of a new sustainable classroom created space for an upper primary class. Barrenjoey Montessori School’s Tasman Rd campus now offers education from Preschool through to Year 6.

  • Newport Campus

Our Under 3s playgroup operates at Eurobodalla Homes Hall in Newport during school terms (Monday–Wednesday). The light-filled open space and covered veranda offer ample room for indoor and outdoor activities.

Governance and Philosophy

Governance

Barrenjoey Montessori School is a secular, not-for-profit independent school operated by the Avalon Montessori Association and governed by the school board. All parents are invited to become members of the association, with membership also open to the wider community. School Board Directors are elected by members of the association and meet eight times a year to raise, discuss and vote on school-related issues. The board is also responsible for developing the school’s five-year strategic plan, articulating a future pathway for the school that remains true to its values.

The Board employs a Principal, who is responsible for all matters pertaining to operations and management, and is required to report on these at director meetings. A key component of this delegation is the delivery of an authentic Montessori education for students and families. The Principal is supported by a passionate and experienced team of teachers, support educators and administrative staff.

More information about school operations is available in our Annual Report and Strategic Plan.
