BMS Surfrider Adopt A Beach Partnership

Next Beach Clean: Sunday 1 June, 3-4pm

Barrenjoey Montessori School has partnered with Surfrider Foundation to protect Avalon Beach from pollution.

Being located behind the sand dunes at North Avalon we get to enjoy the wonderful beach location for school sports such as surfing and beach games. Alongside watching the children come to school with smiles on their faces from their morning surf or swim, and enjoy an after school play together up the dunes and in the surf before heading home for the day. It was therefore important that we, as a community, committed to protect our school’s home environment and the land we have been gifted.

Adopting Avalon Beach with Surfrider means we lead a beach clean on the first Sunday of every month. Meeting at Des Creagh Reserve, just by the North Avalon Beach car park, we spend an hour together from 3-4pm collecting as much rubbish as we can, categorising and weighing the results to provide data to the council in support of efforts and solutions to banish the sources of pollution.

It has been a pleasure watching our wonderful community come together on such an important mission. Meeting locals and environmental supporters to work for a common goal. The children have loved getting involved and take their experience into the classroom as inspiration for projects to help raise awareness and find solutions to the plastic pollution problems we face.

We have been supported by local businesses such as Relish Cafe and Avalon Beach RSL, supplying refreshments for the attendees, which is a great way to connect post clean as we watch the sun go down.

All are welcome to join us and make a difference in our local surrounds.
