What is Montessori?

Maria Montessori
Dr Maria Montessori

Montessori is the philosophy and method of education developed by Dr. Maria Montessori over fifty years. Dr. Montessori was the first woman in Italy to earn a degree in medicine, and was a pioneer in progressive education.

She recognised the value of early education and through careful research and observation, developed a structured system of education that nurtures a child's natural curiosity, abilities and positive attitude to learning, allowing children to learn at their own pace.

Specially designed activities assist the young child in developing skills in language, maths, geography, science and music.

The Montessori programme aims to develop the 'whole child' – assisting their social, emotional and physical development.
